Check the weather forecast before you go and be prepared for changing conditions, especially at higher elevations.

    Discover more about Bear Mountain

Bear Mountain, located in Salisbury, Connecticut, is the state's highest mountain peak, rising to an elevation of 2,316 feet. Although not the state's highest point (that honor belongs to the slope of Mount Frissell) , Bear Mountain offers a classic New England hiking experience with rewarding panoramic views. The most popular route to the summit involves hiking a portion of the Appalachian Trail. The trails are generally well-maintained, but hikers should expect rocky and steep sections. The ascent passes through classic New England woodlands, with streams and small waterfalls along the way. Mid-June to July brings the bloom of mountain laurel, adding splashes of white and pink to the landscape. At the summit, hikers can enjoy views of the surrounding valleys, lakes, and mountains in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. The remains of a stone tower, originally built in 1885, mark the summit. Though the tower has partially collapsed over the years, it still provides a unique spot to take in the scenery.
