Discover more about Castle Craig

Castle Craig, a prominent stone observation tower, stands proudly on East Peak within Meriden's expansive Hubbard Park. Dedicated in 1900, the tower was gifted to the people of Meriden by Walter Hubbard, a local industrialist and philanthropist. The park itself, comprising 1,800 acres, also bears his name. The tower, constructed from local trap rock by skilled stone masons, reaches a height of 32 feet and has a circumference of 58 feet. An interior stairway allows visitors to ascend to the observation deck, where they are rewarded with stunning views. From this vantage point, one can see as far as New Haven and Long Island Sound to the south, the foothills of the Berkshires to the west, and the Hartford skyline and Mount Tom to the north. The design inspiration for Castle Craig remains a topic of debate. Some believe Hubbard, an avid traveler, drew inspiration from Norman French towers, while others suggest a 12th-century Turkish tower on the Danube or an ancient tower in Craigellachie, Scotland, served as the model. Hubbard Park, where Castle Craig resides, offers a variety of activities, including hiking trails for all skill levels. The park also features picnic areas, Mirror Lake, and several historic structures, such as the Halfway House. The road to Castle Craig is open to vehicular traffic from May to October, weather permitting. Walkers and joggers can use the road year-round during park hours. The tower has also inspired local legends, including the tale of the Black Dog, a mythical animal whose sightings are said to bring both good fortune and misfortune.
