Tarrywile Park: Danbury's Natural Escape

Tarrywile Park, the largest municipally owned park in Connecticut, presents a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Located about a mile from downtown Danbury, the park encompasses 722 acres of diverse terrain, including woodlands, open fields, dense forests, and steep hillsides. It was once an active dairy farm and fruit orchard owned by the Charles D. Parks Estate. In 1985, the City of Danbury purchased the land, preserving it for public use after local residents rallied against a proposed condo development. Today, Tarrywile Park is a haven for hikers, nature enthusiasts, and history buffs alike. Within the park's boundaries stand two notable historical structures: Tarrywile Mansion and the remains of Hearthstone Castle, both listed on the National Register for Historic Preservation. The Tarrywile Mansion, a 23-room Shingle-style Victorian mansion built in 1897, is a beautifully preserved example of its architectural style. Hearthstone Castle, built around the same time, now stands in ruins but offers a glimpse into the past. The park boasts an extensive network of trails, with 21 miles of marked hiking trails catering to various skill levels. These trails wind through diverse landscapes, from open fields with scenic views to rugged, rocky terrain within the woods. Visitors can explore trails around Parks Pond, venture to Back Pond, or hike up to Mootry Point for panoramic views. The trails are open year-round, weather permitting, and offer opportunities for hiking, cross-country running and skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, and even horseback riding. Tarrywile Park also offers various amenities, including picnic areas, gardens, and fishing opportunities. Parks Pond is a popular spot for fishing and quiet reflection.
