Silver Sands State Park: A Coastal Retreat

Silver Sands State Park, located on Long Island Sound in Milford, Connecticut, is a 297-acre coastal haven offering a variety of recreational activities and natural beauty. The park's centerpiece is its mile-long sandy beach, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months, ensuring a safe swimming environment. During low tide, visitors can walk across a tombolo, a sandy isthmus, to reach the island. However, access to the island is prohibited from May through September to protect nesting birds. Charles Island has a rich history, with legends of buried pirate treasure and ruins of a former Catholic retreat. The park also offers hiking trails, boardwalks, and observation platforms for exploring its natural beauty. A boardwalk extends from the parking lot to the beach and along part of the beach, providing accessible pathways for all visitors. The trails form segments of the East Coast Greenway, offering opportunities for longer walks and hikes. Silver Sands State Park was established in 1960 after Hurricane Diane destroyed 75 homes in the area in 1955. The state acquired the land and restored it to its natural coastal state.
