    Discover more about Heather Garden

The Heather Garden, nestled within Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan, offers a serene escape with its diverse collection of plants and breathtaking views. This three-acre garden, the largest public garden with unrestricted access in New York City, is home to over 500 varieties of trees, shrubs, and perennials, including a vast assortment of heaths and heathers. Originally designed by the Olmsted Brothers for John D. Rockefeller Jr. in 1935, the Heather Garden was conceived as a distinct area of beauty within the park. The garden is built into the side of a rocky ridge, featuring terraces and a 600-foot promenade. Low-growing heather was chosen as the predominant plant to preserve the spectacular views of the Hudson River and the Palisades. The garden is bisected by a central path, with a perennial border on one side and a heather bed on the other. The perennial border showcases old-world roses, historic azaleas, hydrangeas, and other flowering shrubs, providing year-round structure. The heather bed features over 30 varieties of heaths and heathers, set amidst companion plantings of perennials, conifers, and ornamental trees. The topography and plantings vary from rocky slopes with delicate alpines to meadow-style plantings of sun-loving perennials. Throughout the seasons, the Heather Garden offers a dynamic display of color and texture. In spring, flowering dogwoods, rhododendrons, and azaleas complement peonies, Siberian irises, and poppies. Summer brings yarrows, hibiscus, roses, and catmint, while fall offers spectacular foliage and blooms of asters and hydrangeas. The Heather Garden has undergone several restorations since its completion in 1935, with the most recent renovation completed in 2010. These restorations have ensured the garden remains a vibrant and beautiful space for visitors to enjoy.
