Discover more about Mount Prospect Park

Mount Prospect Park, situated on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, holds a significant place in history and offers a refreshing green space in the city. As the second-highest point in Brooklyn, it was strategically used by the Continental Army as a lookout during the Battle of Long Island in 1776, offering sweeping views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and beyond. In 1856, the City of Brooklyn constructed a reservoir atop Mount Prospect to supply water to the western part of the city. Although initially intended to be part of Prospect Park, designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux decided against including it due to Flatbush Avenue bisecting the landscape. By the 1930s, the reservoir became obsolete due to new water sources, and in 1940, the land was transformed into a park. Today, Mount Prospect Park features playgrounds, picnic areas, and dog-friendly paths, making it a popular spot for locals. It sits near the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and the Central Library, adding to the area's cultural richness.
