Spuyten Duyvil: A Williamsburg Beer Haven

For over two decades, Spuyten Duyvil was a cornerstone of the Williamsburg craft beer scene. This intimate bar, located on Metropolitan Avenue, cultivated a dedicated following for its carefully curated selection of Belgian and other international beers, offering a welcome alternative to the neighborhood's more mainstream options. The bar's interior exuded a cozy, old-world charm, with a long mahogany bar, antique decor, and a blood-red tin ceiling. A chalkboard displayed the ever-changing beer list, featuring a wide array of obscure and sought-after brews. Knowledgeable bartenders were always on hand to guide patrons through the extensive menu, offering recommendations and samples. Beyond the bar, a hidden gem awaited: a spacious backyard garden. Enclosed by ivy-covered brick walls and furnished with mismatched chairs and tables, the garden provided a tranquil escape from the bustling streets of Williamsburg. It was the perfect spot to savor a complex Belgian ale on a warm evening. Spuyten Duyvil wasn't just about the beer; it was a community gathering place. The bar fostered a welcoming atmosphere where locals and tourists alike could come together to enjoy good company and conversation. Although Spuyten Duyvil served cheese and meat plates, it wasn't really a place for a full meal. Unfortunately, like many small businesses in New York City, Spuyten Duyvil faced increasing economic pressures. Rising rents and the increasing ubiquity of craft beer ultimately led to its closure in April 2024. While the bar may be gone, its legacy as a pioneer of the craft beer movement in Williamsburg will not be forgotten.
