    Discover more about The Mall

The Mall in Central Park, originally named The Promenade, stands as a testament to the vision of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who designed Central Park in 1858. This grand, formal area was intended to be a social space where New Yorkers from all walks of life could gather, stroll, and enjoy the beauty of nature. Modeled after the formal allées of European parks like Versailles, The Mall was designed as a wide walkway where park-goers could see and be seen. The Mall stretches from 66th to 72nd Streets and is distinguished as the only straight path within Central Park's otherwise naturalistic design. Lined with four rows of majestic American elm trees, The Mall creates a cathedral-like ambiance with its overarching branches forming a stunning canopy. These trees, carefully planted, provide shade and a sense of architectural grandeur, reminiscent of the great European parks. At the southern end of The Mall lies Literary Walk, adorned with statues of renowned writers including William Shakespeare, Fitz-Greene Halleck, Robert Burns, and Sir Walter Scott. These statues underscore the importance of culture and education in the park's design, offering visitors a chance to reflect on literary giants. In 2020, the Women's Rights Pioneers Monument was added, marking the first new monument in the Park in over 50 years. Today, The Mall remains a popular destination, attracting millions of visitors each year. It serves as a venue for various events, performances, and gatherings, continuing its legacy as a central meeting place for New Yorkers and tourists alike. Whether strolling beneath the elm trees, admiring the statues, or enjoying a performance at the nearby SummerStage, The Mall offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural enrichment.
