Mount Tom Tower, standing proudly in Mount Tom State Park, offers visitors a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty. Built in 1921 from locally sourced black gneiss, the 34-foot tower replaced a wooden structure erected in 1888. The tower's construction fulfilled a condition of Charles H. Senff's donation of the land to the state, ensuring a permanent observation point.
The park itself is one of Connecticut's oldest, established in 1915. Hiking the nearly one-mile trail to the tower's summit is a rewarding experience, with an elevation gain of approximately 500 feet. From the top, breathtaking 360-degree views unfold, encompassing Mount Everett in Massachusetts, the Catskill Mountains in New York, and even Long Island Sound on a clear day.
Beyond the tower, Mount Tom State Park offers a range of activities. Visitors can enjoy fishing, swimming, and canoeing in the 56-acre Mount Tom Pond. Driving
From anywhere in the Litchfield Hills area, head towards Washington Depot. Follow CT-202 S towards Washington Depot. Turn right onto Smokey Hollow Rd. Drive for about 1 mile to reach Mount Tom Tower. There is a parking area available at the park. Note that during peak times, parking may be limited. Out-of-state vehicles may be charged a parking fee on weekends and holidays.
Public Transport
Take the CT Transit bus from Litchfield to Washington Depot. From the Washington Depot stop, walk approximately 1 mile to Smokey Hollow Rd. Head southeast on CT-47, then turn right onto Smokey Hollow Rd and continue for about 1 mile to reach Mount Tom Tower. Bus schedules and potential fare costs should be checked in advance.
