Discover more about Mohawk Mountain State Park

Mohawk Mountain State Park is a sprawling natural area in northwestern Connecticut, offering a variety of outdoor activities and scenic vistas throughout the year. The park's history dates back to 1921 when Alain C. White donated 250 acres to Connecticut citizens. Over time, the White Memorial Foundation contributed over 2,900 acres to the acquisition of the forest. The park's diverse terrain includes rugged hills, a wildlife sanctuary, and a unique plant community centered around the Black Spruce Bog. This bog, formed after the last glacial period, is home to black spruce and larch trees rarely found in such stature in the state. A boardwalk trail minimizes damage to the bog while allowing visitors to explore this unique ecosystem. Hiking is a popular activity, with trails catering to various skill levels. The blue-blazed Mohawk Trail, a former section of the Appalachian Trail, traverses the park, offering challenging hikes and scenic views. The summit of Mohawk Mountain, at 1,683 feet, provides panoramic views of the Catskill, Taconic, and Berkshire ranges. Cunningham Tower, a historic stone tower built in 1915, is another point of interest within the park. In the winter, Mohawk Mountain transforms into a winter sports destination. While Mohawk Mountain Ski Area is a private ski resort, the park offers opportunities for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
