Roaring Brook Nature Center, nestled in Canton, Connecticut, has been a cherished destination for nature lovers and families since 1948. Originally the Canton Children's Nature Museum, it was founded by Canton resident Una Storrs Riddle. In 1964, the adjacent 100-acre Werner Farm was bequeathed to the state, expanding the center into a wildlife sanctuary and outdoor classroom. Today, Roaring Brook encompasses over 160 acres and maintains five miles of trails in the adjacent Werner's Woods. The center features diverse indoor and outdoor exhibits. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits showcasing the changing Connecticut landscape over the past 500 years, including the impact on local flora and fauna. Exhibits include a replica of an Eastern Woodland Native American longhouse and a beaver wetland exhibit. Live animal displays feature rescued and rehabilitated birds of prey, reptiles, and amphibians. Outdoor attractions include a bird and butterfly garden, a geology garden, and a vernal pool observation deck. The trails of Werner's Woods offer opportunities for hiking, birding, and nature photography. The trails vary in difficulty, with options for all skill levels. Self-guiding trail maps are available in the nature store. Roaring Brook also offers year-round educational programs for all ages, including nature walks, lectures, and special events.
