Getting There

  • Driving

    Talcott Mountain State Park is accessible by car via Route 185. From I-91, take Exit 35B (Bloomfield/Route 218) west, then follow Route 185 towards Simsbury. From I-84, take the Route 44 exit near Hartford, then follow Route 44 west to Route 218, and finally Route 185. The park entrance is on the left at the top of the hill. Parking is available at the Day Use Entrance. During peak times, the parking lot can fill up quickly, so arriving early is advised. There are no entry fees for Talcott Mountain State Park. Once parked, the Heublein Tower is accessible only by foot via the Tower Trail, a 1.25-mile hike.

    From the parking area , follow the yellow-blazed Tower Trail for 1.25 miles to reach the Heublein Tower. The hike is moderately difficult and takes approximately 30-40 minutes. The first quarter mile of the trail is steep. There are no fees associated with accessing the trail.

Talcott Mountain State Park, spanning 574 acres in Avon, Bloomfield, and Simsbury, Connecticut, is a treasure trove of natural beauty and historical significance. The park's main draw is the Heublein Tower, a 165-foot structure offering 360-degree views of the Connecticut landscape. From this vantage point, you can see as far as Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire and Long Island Sound.The tower was built in 1914 by Gilbert Heublein, a food and beverage magnate, as a summer retreat for his family. Designed in a Bavarian style, the tower was built to withstand winds of over 100 miles per hour. It even featured one of Connecticut's first elevators. Over the years, the tower hosted notable guests, including Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan.The most popular way to reach the tower is via the Tower Trail, a 1.25-mile hike that takes about 30-40 minutes. The trail is considered moderately difficult, with some steep sections. Along the way, hikers can enjoy scenic overlooks and spot local wildlife. The park also includes a section of the Metacomet Trail.Talcott Mountain has a rich history beyond the Heublein Tower. In the early 19th century, Daniel Wadsworth, founder of the Wadsworth Atheneum, owned land on the mountain and opened it to the public as a resort. He even built two observation towers, though both were destroyed by weather. Talcott Mountain State Park was established in 1965, ensuring the preservation of this natural and historical landmark for future generations.
