The White Memorial Conservation Center, nestled in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains in Litchfield, Connecticut, offers a sprawling 4,000-acre sanctuary for exploration and education. Founded by Alain and May White in 1913, the White Memorial Foundation aimed to preserve the natural landscape surrounding their family's Whitehall property. In 1964, the White Memorial Conservation Center was established to further the Foundation's educational role.The heart of the center is the natural history museum, housed in Whitehall, the former White family residence. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits focusing on local natural history, conservation, and ecology. The museum features hand-painted murals, dioramas, a children's corner, live animals, and unique displays like a life-sized beaver lodge. The museum outlines the impact humans have had on the region, beginning with the Peantam group of the Potatuck tribe, the growth and decline of European-American agriculture, and the legacy of Alain and May White.Outside, a network of 40 miles of trails crisscrosses diverse habitats, including woodlands, streams, fields, ponds, and marshes. These trails are open to the public for hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, biking, and horseback riding. Popular trails include the easy 1.2-mile Little Pond Boardwalk Trail, which loops around Little Pond via boardwalks and bridges. The Ice House Ruins Trail offers a glimpse into the area's industrial past. The White Memorial also serves as the northern terminus for the 42-mile Mattatuck Trail.The Conservation Center offers year-round programs for all ages, including field trips, lectures, nature study programs and summer camps. The Mott-Van Winkle Center provides facilities for environmental education and public events.
