Today, the harbor is still a major commercial port.Key features of the harbor include the three breakwaters constructed in 1915 to shelter the entrance. These breakwaters, along with channels dredged by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ensure safe passage for vessels. The harbor is bordered by New Haven neighborhoods such as City Point, Long Wharf, and East Shore, as well as the city of West Haven.Visitors can explore the harbor through various activities.
