Sheffield Island Lighthouse, standing proudly on Sheffield Island, Connecticut, is a testament to the region's rich maritime past. The island, once known as White Island, was purchased by Captain Robert Sheffield in 1804. In 1826, his son-in-law Gershom Smith sold a portion of the island to the U.S. government, leading to the construction of the first lighthouse in 1828. Smith himself became the first keeper.The original 30-foot tower was replaced in 1868 with the Victorian-style lighthouse that stands today. This new structure was equipped with a fourth-order Fresnel lens, enhancing its visibility for mariners. However, with the construction of Greens Ledge Light in 1902, Sheffield Island Light was decommissioned.In 1986, the Norwalk Seaport Association acquired the lighthouse and has since been dedicated to its preservation and restoration. Today, visitors can take a ferry to the island and tour the lighthouse, learning about its history and the lives of those who served there. The island itself is a part of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, offering nature trails, observation platforms, and opportunities for birdwatching. The lighthouse tower is currently closed, but an antique telescope is available for visitors to enjoy magnificent views.
