    Discover more about Amster Yard

Tucked away in the Turtle Bay neighborhood of Manhattan, Amster Yard is a hidden gem that provides a serene retreat from the city's energetic pace. Located at 211 E 49th St, between Second and Third Avenues, this L-shaped courtyard offers a unique blend of nature and history. Created by interior designer James Amster between 1944 and 1946, Amster Yard transformed a collection of 19th-century buildings into a harmonious array of brick houses surrounding a lush courtyard garden. The site's history dates back even further, with the area once serving as the terminal stop for the 18th-century Boston stagecoach along the old Eastern Post Road. In 1966, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated Amster Yard as a city landmark, recognizing its picturesque character and historical significance. While the original buildings were reconstructed in the early 2000s by the Instituto Cervantes, the spirit of Amster's design has been preserved, offering visitors a chance to experience a unique urban oasis. The Instituto Cervantes New York, a non-profit organization created by the Spanish government, has owned the yard and its surrounding structures since 1999. Beneath the yard are spaces for the Instituto Cervantes, including an auditorium, library, and gallery. Today, visitors can stroll through the courtyard, admire the plantings, and appreciate the blend of old and new architecture. The yard's entrance is through an archway at 211 East 49th Street, leading into a slate-covered courtyard filled with shrubbery and trees.
