Bluff Point State Park: Coastal Reserve

Bluff Point State Park, located in Groton, Connecticut, is an 806-acre coastal reserve offering a diverse landscape of woodlands, beaches, and tidal wetlands. As one of the last significant undeveloped sections of the state's coastline, it provides a unique opportunity to experience Connecticut's natural beauty. The park's history dates back to the 17th century when the land was granted to John Winthrop the Younger, later serving as farmland and a summer resort in the early 20th century. The Great New England Hurricane of 1938 swept away many of the cottages that populated the area. In 1963, the state began acquiring the land, officially designating it a Coastal Reserve in 1975 to protect its ecological integrity. Today, Bluff Point is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can explore miles of trails perfect for hiking, walking, trail running, mountain biking, and even horseback riding. The most popular trail leads to the bluff, rewarding hikers with panoramic views of Long Island Sound. The flat fire road to the bluff travels along the Poquonnock River and passes through wooded coastal forest, salt marshes, and open areas. The park's diverse habitats support a variety of plant and animal life, including rare and endangered species. Birdwatchers can spot shorebirds, migrant songbirds, and forest interior breeding birds. The long, narrow beach is a geological remnant of the continental glaciers and subsequent erosion by wind and water. Visitors can also explore the remains of the Midway Railroad Roundhouse, a historic site from the early 20th century. The turntable pit and roundhouse foundation are still visible within the park. Bluff Point State Park offers a variety of recreational opportunities, including saltwater fishing and small craft shore launch.
