Discover more about Enders State Forest

Enders State Forest, a 2,100-acre woodland in Granby and Barkhamsted, Connecticut, offers a refreshing escape into nature. Established in 1970, the forest was a generous gift from the Enders family, in memory of John Ostrom Enders and Harriet Whitmore Enders. The forest's main attraction is the series of waterfalls along Enders Brook, each with its own unique charm. A well-marked trail, blazed with purple, guides hikers to the cascading waters. The path is roughly three-quarters of a mile long and is considered a short, but rewarding hike. The trail features stone steps and wood rail fencing, providing both safety and ease of access. The landscape varies from a high point of just over 1,100 feet above sea level to a low of around 900 feet at the western wetlands. This diverse topography creates a network of streams that flow eastward to the west branch of the Salmon River. The dense tree canopy often creates damp conditions on the forest floor, so caution is advised. Enders State Forest is managed for sawtimber, firewood, wildlife habitat, and recreational activities. Visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, and bird watching. Hunting is permitted in some of the newer sections on the northeastern side of the forest; be sure to check the DEEP hunting area map for specific hunting zones if visiting during hunting season. While swimming is popular, it is important to exercise caution around the waterfalls. Rocks can be slippery, and there have been reports of injuries. Staying on marked trails and behind safety railings is recommended.
