Webb Mountain Discovery Zone: A Natural Learning Oasis

Webb Mountain Discovery Zone is a 171-acre park in Monroe, Connecticut, designed as an outdoor learning center. Opened in October 2007, the park aims to connect visitors with nature through hands-on experiences. It features a comprehensive interpretive trail system with signage and a self-directed scavenger hunt. The park has three marked loop trails, each offering unique sights. Loop #1 (1.1 miles) includes a 19th-century quarry and kiln. Loop #2 (1.8 miles) passes ponds, hayfields, mountain laurel, and birch trees. Loop #3 (1.6 miles) goes by a large vernal pool. These trails are well-maintained and easy to navigate, making them suitable for children. Visitors can explore learning stations covering rocks, minerals, plants, wildlife, ecology, and Native American and Colonial history. The park also offers educational programs for schools, daycare centers, and scouts. The interactive scavenger hunt encourages observation and awareness of the environment. Webb Mountain Discovery Zone is adjacent to the 135-acre Webb Mountain Park, which has 13.5 miles of trails. Together, the parks provide extensive opportunities for hiking, nature study, and outdoor activities.
