Westmoor Park, a 162-acre gem in West Hartford, Connecticut, serves as an environmental, agricultural, and horticultural education center. The park's mission is to foster a lifelong commitment to environmental awareness and responsible stewardship. Originally private land since the 17th century, the property was donated to the town in 1973 by Charles Hunter, with the stipulation that it pass to the town after his wife Leila's death. The park officially opened two months later and has since become a beloved community resource. Westmoor Park features a diverse landscape, including a demonstration farm with barnyard animals, wildflower meadows, perennial gardens, woodland trails, and ponds. In 2024, it achieved accreditation as a Level II Arboretum, boasting over 130 species of trees and woody shrubs, each labeled with informational signage. Visitors can explore the park's trails, observe native species, and participate in educational programs. The park also supports a 'Plant-A-Row for the Hungry' program, integrating the community in growing organic vegetables and herbs. Whether you're interested in exploring the trails, visiting the farm animals, or learning about nature, Westmoor Park offers something for everyone. It's a place where families, nature enthusiasts, and students can connect with the natural world and appreciate the importance of environmental stewardship.
