Discover more about Bogarin Trail

Just a short walk from downtown La Fortuna, the Bogarin Trail presents an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in Costa Rica's biodiversity. This 16-hectare reserve, once a cattle farm, has been lovingly restored into a secondary rainforest, offering a sanctuary for wildlife. Giovanni Bogarin, with over 30 years of experience, began this transformation in 2000, planting native trees and plants. Today, the trail is home to a diverse array of species, including sloths, toucans, frogs, and a wide variety of birds. The trail itself is a well-maintained 2.5 km loop with flat, hard-packed dirt paths, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the numerous species that frequent the area, with over 400 species recorded on eBird. Keep an eye out for rufous-tailed jacamars, honeycreepers, and the elusive uniform crake. The presence of a bird feeder near the entrance attracts many colorful birds, offering fantastic photo opportunities. Sloths are a major draw to the Bogarin Trail, with a healthy population residing in the reserve. Visitors often spot several sloths during a single visit, observing them in their natural habitat. In addition to sloths and birds, you might encounter reptiles like red-eyed tree frogs and strawberry poison dart frogs, especially on night tours. Mammals such as agoutis and coatis are also occasionally spotted. The Bogarin Trail combines conservation, education, and local community values, offering an authentic and memorable experience in the heart of Arenal's tropical paradise.
