Discover more about Cavernas de Venado

Venture into the depths of the Earth at the Cavernas de Venado, a mesmerizing network of caves sculpted over millions of years. Located near the town of Venado in the Alajuela Province, these caves offer an unforgettable subterranean experience. Discovered in 1945 by a local hunter, Lael Herrera, the caves were already known to the indigenous Maleku people. Formed an estimated 15 to 20 million years ago during the Miocene epoch, the caves were created by water erosion carving through limestone when the area was submerged under the ocean. Today, visitors can explore a 1.5-mile system of caves adorned with impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and other unique rock formations. Some formations even resemble familiar objects, like 'La Papaya'. A guided tour leads you through the cave's chambers, some reaching up to 35 meters in height. Be prepared to wade through underground streams and crawl through narrow spaces, with the option to pass through 'El Parto' (the Birth Canal), the cave's narrowest passage. Keep an eye out for the cave's inhabitants, including bats, spiders, fish, and other creatures adapted to the darkness. Fossils of marine organisms embedded in the cave walls serve as a reminder of the area's underwater past.
