Discover more about Rio Celeste Experience

Rio Celeste, or "Sky Blue River," is a natural wonder located in the Tenorio Volcano National Park in the Alajuela Province of Costa Rica. The river's distinctive and vibrant turquoise-blue color is caused by a unique phenomenon: a chemical reaction between volcanic minerals, specifically aluminosilicate minerals, that reflect sunlight in a way that creates the intense blue hue. The main attraction is the Rio Celeste Waterfall, a stunning cascade of bright blue water plunging 98 feet into a pristine pool. The hike to the waterfall is moderately challenging, taking visitors through a lush rainforest. The trail is about 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) round trip and can take around 3 hours to complete. The descent to the waterfall viewpoint involves navigating approximately 250 steps. Along the trail, you'll encounter other natural gems, including the Blue Lagoon (Laguna Azul), a serene pool of electric-blue water, and Los Borbollones, bubbling hot springs fueled by volcanic activity. The "Teñideros," is the point where the river changes to its remarkable blue color. Tenorio Volcano National Park is home to diverse wildlife, including sloths, monkeys, and various bird species. Visitors are encouraged to wear appropriate hiking shoes, bring insect repellent, and be prepared for rain, as the area experiences frequent showers. Swimming is prohibited in the Rio Celeste within the national park to protect its fragile ecosystem. However, a free public swimming spot, the Rio Celeste Free Pool, is located outside the park entrance. The park is open from 8 am to 4 pm, with the last entry at 2 pm. Tickets must be purchased online in advance through the SINAC website.
