Discover more about Rio Celeste y Los Teñideros

Rio Celeste, or "Celestial River," is a mesmerizing natural wonder nestled within the Tenorio Volcano National Park in Costa Rica. The river's captivating turquoise blue color is a result of a unique phenomenon where two rivers with different mineral compositions meet, creating an optical illusion known as Mie scattering. Legend says that when God finished painting the sky blue, he washed his brushes in the Rio Celeste. The main trail within the park is 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) round trip and takes about 3-4 hours to complete, showcasing the park's highlights. The first stop is the stunning Rio Celeste Waterfall, which plunges 98 feet into a pool of bright blue water. Visitors can descend a series of approximately 250 steep steps to reach the base of the waterfall for a closer view. Continuing along the trail, hikers will encounter the Mirador (viewpoint), Laguna Azul (a bright blue lagoon), Borbollones (a boiling spring), and finally, Los Teñideros, where the Buena Vista River and Quebrada Agria meet to create the celestial blue color. The hike to Los Teñideros includes crossing hanging bridges that offer great views of the river and surrounding rainforest. Tenorio Volcano National Park is home to diverse flora and fauna, including toucans, monkeys, and jaguars. Visitors should wear sturdy hiking boots, as the trails can be muddy and slippery, especially during the rainy season (May-November). Swimming is prohibited within the national park to protect the delicate ecosystem. However, there is a free public entrance by the bridge 1 kilometer past the park entrance where swimming is allowed.
