Discover more about Cerro Chirripo

Cerro Chirripó, meaning "land of eternal waters" in a local indigenous language, is the centerpiece of Chirripó National Park and the highest peak in Costa Rica and Central America. The park itself spans across parts of the San José, Limón, and Cartago provinces, encompassing a remarkable range of habitats due to variations in altitude, soil, climate, and topography. The challenging 20-km (12.4-mile) hike to the summit is the main draw, attracting both local and international visitors. The ascent involves a significant elevation gain of nearly 3,000 meters (10,000 feet), demanding considerable fitness. The journey typically takes two to three days, with an overnight stay at the Crestones Base Camp, a rustic lodge located 14.5 km (9 miles) from the trailhead. As hikers ascend, they pass through a stunning array of ecological zones. The lower elevations feature tropical evergreen and montane rainforests, home to giant oak trees, ferns, and bamboo. Higher up, the landscape transitions to the unique alpine paramo, characterized by shrubs, grasses, and rocky terrain. This high moorland is a remnant of glacial activity from around 30,000 years ago, leaving behind U-shaped valleys, moraines, and glacial lakes.Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate the park's diverse fauna, including spider monkeys, Baird's tapirs, peccaries, and elusive jaguars and pumas. Over 400 species of birds, including woodpeckers, trogons, and quetzals, make it a birdwatcher's paradise. The park is also home to over 260 species of amphibians and reptiles.Reaching the summit rewards hikers with unparalleled 360-degree views, stretching from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean on a clear day. The experience is often described as "beyond the imaginable," a testament to the natural beauty and challenge of Cerro Chirripó.
