Plateau Mosque: A Modern Islamic Icon in Abidjan

The Plateau Mosque is a prominent religious and architectural landmark in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Officially known as the Grande Mosquée du Plateau, it is located in the heart of the city's administrative and commercial center. The mosque is a testament to the growing Islamic presence in Ivory Coast and serves as a vital spiritual and community hub for Muslims in Abidjan.Construction of the mosque began in 1996, with the first stone laid by then-President Henri Konan Bédié. However, the project faced significant delays due to political and economic crises, halting construction for nearly 18 years. In 2007, thanks to a donation from Saudi Arabia, the project was revived, and the mosque was finally completed.The mosque's architecture is a blend of modern and traditional Islamic design elements. The most striking feature is its large, majorelle-blue dome, which dominates the Abidjan skyline. The 65-meter minaret is another prominent feature, from which the call to prayer is announced. The mosque covers an area of 7,500 square meters and can accommodate up to 6,500 worshippers, with space for 3,500 on the esplanade and 3,000 in the prayer hall.Inside, the mosque features a large prayer hall adorned with elegant decorations that reflect the spiritual significance of the space. The mosque also houses several offices, shops, a library with religious texts, a residence for the Imam, a 300-seat amphitheater, a mortuary, and a mezzanine for women with a capacity of 500. The Plateau Mosque is not only a place of worship but also a center for community events and educational programs, strengthening the Islamic ethos in Abidjan.
