Discover more about Plateau Mosque

The Plateau Mosque, officially known as the Grande Mosquée du Plateau, stands as a testament to Abidjan's religious diversity and architectural innovation. Located in the heart of the Plateau district, the city's bustling business center, this mosque is a significant landmark for both its religious importance and its modern design. The mosque's construction began in 1996, with the first stone laid by President Henri Konan Bédié. However, the project faced numerous delays due to financial constraints and political instability, with construction halted for 18 years. Generous donations, including a substantial contribution from Saudi Arabia, allowed for the completion of the mosque in 2012. The Plateau Mosque boasts a contemporary architectural style, distinct from the traditional Moroccan design of the Grande Mosquée. It features a towering 65-meter minaret that dominates the Abidjan skyline and can accommodate 6,500 worshippers, with space for 3,500 on the esplanade and 3,000 in the prayer hall. The mosque also houses several offices, shops, a library, an amphitheater, and other facilities. Visitors are welcome to admire the mosque's exterior and serene ambiance. While non-Muslims may not be allowed inside during prayer times, the architectural details, including the elegant dome and minaret, offer excellent photography opportunities. Modest attire is recommended when visiting the mosque to show respect for local customs.
