Discover more about Sanctuaire Marial

Nestled in the Attécoubé commune of Abidjan, the Sanctuaire Marial National, also known as Notre-Dame-d'Afrique d'Abidjan, is a major pilgrimage site and a center of devotion for those seeking refuge with the Virgin Mary. The shrine's history began in the 1970s when local Christians in Cité Fairmont lacked a nearby parish. Cardinal Bernard Yago initiated the project to construct a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary, envisioning it as an international platform for Marian devotion. The first stone was laid on February 2, 1985, and the shrine was inaugurated on February 1, 1987, by Cardinal Yago in the presence of Head of State Félix Houphouët-Boigny. Pope John Paul II had blessed the first stone during his visit to Ivory Coast in 1980 and suggested naming it “Our Lady of Africa”. The modern design of the shrine is the work of Italian architect Aldo Spirito, who also designed St. Paul's Cathedral in Abidjan. Today, the Sanctuaire Marial welcomes visitors from all walks of life, inviting them to admire its beauty and enjoy its calming atmosphere. The shrine is open daily from early morning until evening. Visitors can explore the intricate designs, participate in spiritual services, or relax in the surrounding gardens. The shrine is a symbol of the rich cultural heritage and a testament to the community's values and devotion, making it an essential stop for anyone exploring Abidjan.
