Discover more about Sanctuaire Marial

The Sanctuaire Marial National, also known as the Marian Shrine of Abidjan, stands as a testament to faith and architectural innovation in the Attécoubé district of Abidjan. This prominent shrine, dedicated to Our Lady of Africa, serves as a major pilgrimage site in Côte d'Ivoire, attracting over 3,000 pilgrims weekly. The shrine's history began in the 1970s when Christians in Cité Fairmont sought a local place for worship. Cardinal Bernard Yago envisioned a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary and secured funding from President Félix Houphouët-Boigny. The first stone was laid in 1985, and the Sanctuaire Marial was inaugurated on February 1, 1987. In 2012, it officially became the National Marian Shrine. The architecture, designed by Italian architect Aldo Spirito, is striking. A 53-meter conical bell tower dominates the site, featuring reinforced concrete and blue-painted helical roofs for natural ventilation. The tower is adorned with a 6-meter stained glass window of the Virgin Mary and houses a 500 kg bell. Inside the main church, which can accommodate 800 people, artwork by Paul Siaka Coulibaly depicts the Virgin Mary as an Ivorian woman. Visitors can attend regular services, explore the peaceful gardens, and admire the intricate details of the shrine. The Sanctuaire Marial offers a unique cultural and spiritual experience, inviting reflection and connection with the local community.
