Discover more about Sanctuaire Marial

The Sanctuaire Marial National, also known as the Marian Shrine of Abidjan, stands as a beacon of faith and architectural beauty in the Attécoubé district. Conceived by Cardinal Bernard Yago and designed by Italian architect Aldo Spirito, the shrine was built between 1985 and 1987. It serves as Côte d'Ivoire's principal Marian pilgrimage site, drawing thousands of pilgrims weekly. The shrine's architecture is striking, featuring a 53-meter conical bell tower with reinforced concrete and blue-painted helical roofs that provide natural ventilation. The interior of the main church can accommodate 800 people and is adorned with artwork by Paul Siaka Coulibaly, including sculptures of the Virgin Mary represented as an Ivorian woman and scenes of Calvary. A 6-meter stained-glass window at the tower's summit depicts the Virgin Mary in Assumption, while an 11-meter statue stands outside the building. The Sanctuaire Marial is more than just a place of worship; it's a spiritual oasis where visitors can find solace and connect with their faith. The shrine's peaceful gardens provide a serene environment for reflection, and the site is open daily, allowing ample time for exploration and contemplation. Regular services are held, including daily masses and special events like the Grande Nuit des 1000 Ave. The shrine has become a national symbol, with Cardinal Yago's vision of creating an international platform for Marian devotion gradually materializing.
