The Plateau Mosque, officially known as the Grande Mosquée du Plateau, is a significant religious and architectural landmark located in the Plateau district of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The mosque's modern design features a striking 65-meter minaret that is visible from across the city. The mosque is built on approximately 7,500 square meters and can accommodate 6,500 worshippers, with space for 3,500 on the esplanade and 3,000 in the prayer hall. Construction of the mosque began in 1996, with the first stone laid in 1994 by President Henry Konan Bédié. Funding came from the state and various donors, including the ZEID Charitable Foundation of the United Arab Emirates and the Aga Khan Foundation. Construction was halted for 18 years due to crises before being revived in 2007 with a donation from Saudi Arabia. The mosque has several facilities spread over four levels, including offices, shops, a library with religious texts, a residence for the Imam, a 300-seat amphitheater, a mortuary, and a mezzanine for women with a capacity of 500. Non-Muslims may not be allowed inside during prayer times but can appreciate the exterior beauty and serene ambiance. Visitors should dress modestly and respectfully, covering legs and shoulders.
