St. Paul's Cathedral: A Modern Icon of Abidjan

Cathédrale Saint-Paul d'Abidjan is a unique and modern piece of architecture that dominates Abidjan's skyline. Designed by Italian architect Aldo Spirito, it was commissioned by Côte d'Ivoire's first President, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, to create a world-class cathedral that reflected the aspirations of the Ivorian people. Construction began in 1980, and the cathedral was completed and consecrated in 1985 by Pope John Paul II.The cathedral's design is both modern and symbolic. The concrete cross is anchored to the main cathedral using seven cables, creating the illusion that the structure is being pulled towards the lagoon. The exterior features colorful ceramic panels depicting the story of Christ, integrating African people, landscapes, and lifestyles with biblical narratives. Inside, the cathedral boasts six stained-glass windows covering 370 square meters, also designed by Aldo Spirito, which depict scenes of African abundance and the integration of faith and local culture.St. Paul's Cathedral can accommodate up to 5,000 people and has become a significant landmark in Abidjan.
