Construction began in 1980, and the cathedral was completed and consecrated in 1985 by Pope John Paul II.The cathedral's design is both modern and symbolic. The concrete cross is anchored to the main cathedral using seven cables, creating the illusion that the structure is being pulled towards the lagoon. The exterior features colorful ceramic panels depicting the story of Christ, integrating African people, landscapes, and lifestyles with biblical narratives.
