Zoo d'Abidjan: A Sanctuary of West African Wildlife

Located in Abidjan, the economic capital of Côte d'Ivoire, the Zoo National d'Abidjan has been a fixture since its establishment in 1930. Initially a private animal collection, the zoo was later acquired by the state in 1965 and nationalized in 1972. Despite facing challenges, including periods of instability and the 2011 civil war, which led to the loss of many animals, the zoo has persevered and is committed to conservation efforts. The zoo covers a large area and houses over 200 animals representing more than 50 species. Visitors can observe African wildlife, such as lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, chimpanzees, and baboons. The zoo also features a variety of reptiles, birds, and other exotic animals. The facility is particularly known for maintaining the largest collection of slender-snouted crocodiles in captivity and participates in breeding programs to support regional conservation. The Zoo d'Abidjan is not only a place to view animals but also an educational center. Thousands of students visit monthly for educational programs focused on wildlife conservation and the protection of endangered African species. Interactive exhibits and guided tours provide visitors with in-depth knowledge about the animals and the zoo's conservation work. The zoo also offers recreational facilities such as picnic areas and a small amusement park, making it a destination for families and nature lovers.
