Discover more about Palais Présidentiel

The Palais Présidentiel, located in the Plateau district of Abidjan, serves as the official residence and office of the President of Côte d'Ivoire. Designed by architect Pierre Dufau, with assistance from Maurice Lafon, the palace was inaugurated in 1962, shortly after the country's independence. It was commissioned by Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the first president of Côte d'Ivoire, as a symbol of the nation's sovereignty. The palace complex includes the main building, the president's private residence, and ministerial offices, offering views of the Ébrié Lagoon. The architecture features a classical style with monumental columns and surrounding gardens. The interior decoration was entrusted to renowned artists, including Bernard Buffet for paintings, René Collamarini for exterior sculptures, Louis Dideron for interior sculptures, and Jean Lurçat for tapestries. While the administrative capital of Côte d'Ivoire moved to Yamoussoukro in 1983, the Palais Présidentiel in Abidjan remains the primary residence of the head of state. Although not generally open to the public, its impressive facade and surrounding esplanade offer a glimpse into the political heart of Côte d'Ivoire.
