The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, or Basilique Notre-Dame de la Paix, is a Catholic minor basilica in Yamoussoukro, the administrative capital of Côte d'Ivoire. It is the largest church in the world, as listed by Guinness World Records, surpassing St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. The basilica was a project of Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the first president of Côte d'Ivoire, who sought to memorialize himself through its construction. Designed by Lebanese architect Pierre Fakhoury, its architecture is inspired by St. Peter's Basilica, featuring a towering dome and colonnades. Construction took place between 1985 and 1989, and the basilica was consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1990. The basilica's dome reaches a height of 158 meters (518 feet), topped with a cross that makes it taller than St. Peter's. The interior is adorned with 8,400 square meters (90,000 sq ft) of contemporary stained glass from France and marble imported from Italy. One of the stained-glass windows even depicts President Houphouët-Boigny kneeling next to Jesus. The basilica can accommodate 18,000 worshippers, with 7,000 seated and 11,000 standing. The esplanade outside can accommodate an additional 300,000 people. Despite its size, regular services usually see only a few hundred attendees. The basilica also includes a rectory and papal villa. The cost of the basilica is estimated to be between $175 million and $600 million. A visit to the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace offers a unique experience of architectural grandeur and religious significance. Visitors can explore the interior, admire the stained glass windows, and appreciate the peaceful atmosphere of the surroundings.
