    Discover more about Modrič cave

Modrič Cave, situated near the village of Rovanjska and approximately 35 km northeast of Zadar, presents a unique and authentic caving experience. Unlike many tourist caves, Modrič has been preserved in its natural state, with no concrete paths, artificial lighting, or man-made barriers. This allows visitors to witness the raw and untouched beauty of the cave's interior. Discovered in 1985 by speleologist Silvijo Legović, the cave extends over 829 meters and is adorned with a variety of impressive speleothems. These include stalactites, stalagmites, pillars, and other unique formations that have been shaped over thousands of years. The cave's narrow passages and spacious chambers create an ever-changing landscape that sparks the imagination. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 15-17°C throughout the year, providing a refreshing escape from the summer heat. The cave is also home to a variety of life, including blind crabs, spiders, snails, and bats, which have adapted to the cave's dark environment. Explorations have also revealed fossil remains of a Bronze Age human, dating back over 4,000 years, as well as ceramic artifacts and remains of a cave bear from the last Ice Age. Visiting Modrič Cave requires a guided tour, as the cave is not open to the public without one. Tours typically last around two hours and include the provision of caving gear such as helmets, lights, and overalls. Participants should wear light clothing and sturdy, closed-toe shoes suitable for walking and crawling through the cave's uneven terrain.
