Discover more about Šmitovo jezero

Šmitovo Jezero, located a short 15-minute drive from Ogulin, is a stunning example of a karst lake system. The lake comprises two interconnected bodies of water: the Malo (Small) and Veliko (Big) Lake. Water flows into the Malo jezero from the Rupećica spring cave through a series of cracks, then flows into Veliko jezero before disappearing into the depths of the karst underground. The lake's former name was Zeleno jezero (Green Lake), inspired by its distinctive emerald-green hue, though no photograph can truly capture its color. Legend has it that a dragon once dwelled in Šmitovo Jezero, and Saint George rescued a maiden from the dragon. Today, a dragon sculpture overlooks the lake, part of the Ogulin Fairy Tale Route inspired by local author Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić. The lake is home to unique wildlife, including the endemic 'riba svjetlica' (Telestes polylepis), a fish whose scales shimmer when illuminated, the 'Ogulin cave sponge' (Eunapius subterraneus), and the olm (Proteus anguinus). Visitors can enjoy a peaceful picnic by the lake or explore the surrounding nature. Šmitovo Jezero offers a tranquil escape and a chance to appreciate Croatia's biodiversity.
