Discover more about Zeleni Vir, water spring

Nestled in the heart of Gorski Kotar, often called the 'green lungs of Croatia,' Zeleni Vir is a captivating natural attraction that beckons with its stunning beauty and serene atmosphere. The centerpiece is the vibrant, emerald-green water spring, the source of which remains a mystery, adding to the location's allure. The spring is set beneath a towering 70-meter cliff, where a picturesque waterfall creates a shimmering curtain as it plunges into the pool below. The area was declared a nature reserve in 1962 and has been recognized as a resort for hikers since 1884. Visitors can explore the dramatic Vražji prolaz (Devil's Passage) canyon, an 800-meter-long gorge carved by the Jasle stream over millennia. Wooden paths and bridges wind through the narrow passage, with rocks rising a hundred meters high on either side, creating a somewhat terrifying, yet stunning experience. At the end of the canyon, adventurers will find the Muževa hižica cave, home to protected bat species. The cave extends 200 meters into the mountain, offering a cool respite. Adding to the area's charm is the Munjara, the oldest hydroelectric power plant in Gorski Kotar, built in 1921 and still operational. This small power plant harnesses the power of the Zeleni Vir spring, showcasing a blend of natural beauty and technical heritage. Zeleni Vir provides a range of attractions for a fulfilling family trip, including a picnic area and a children's playground.
