Klis Fortress, strategically positioned in the mountain pass between Kozjak and Mosor mountains, has been a crucial defensive point throughout history. Its origins trace back to the Illyrian tribe of Dalmatae in the 2nd century BC. Over the centuries, it has been controlled by Romans, Croatians, Ottomans, Venetians, and Austrians, each leaving their mark on its architecture and history.Known as Kelisa during the late Roman Empire, the fortress protected ancient Salona. After the arrival of the Croats, Klis became an important seat for Croatian dukes and kings. The fortress played a significant role in defending against Ottoman invasions, particularly in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Uskoks, a military unit based in Klis, resisted Ottoman advances for decades. Although the Ottomans eventually conquered Klis, it was later reclaimed by the Venetians.Today, Klis Fortress is a popular tourist destination, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich past. Explore the three rings of walls, each with separate entrances, and discover the Venetian Gate, the medieval part, and the residences. The fortress also features the Church of Saint Vitus, originally built as a mosque by the Ottomans. The fortress gained additional fame as a filming location for Meereen in Game of Thrones. Visitors can explore the main courtyard and recognize the stone staircases and open spaces from the series.
