Discover more about Bastion

The Bastion in Osijek stands as a testament to the city's rich and layered past. Constructed in the 18th century by the Habsburg monarchy, the fortress was part of a strategic defensive system against the Ottoman Empire. Osijek's strategic importance has been recognized since Roman times when the town of Mursa was established on the site. The Bastion is located on the right bank of the Drava River. The fortress features impressive architecture and well-preserved walls. Visitors can explore the grounds, enjoy views of the river, and relax in the surrounding green spaces. The grassy areas on top of the Bastion are ideal for picnics. While much of the original fortifications were demolished in the early 20th century to allow for urban development, parts of the first and eighth bastions, along with the northern wall and Water Gate, have been preserved. Today, the Bastion hosts cultural events and festivals, making it a vibrant hub for locals and tourists.
