Getting there

Walking

From Trg Ante Starčevića, Osijek's main square, walk along Šetalište kardinala Franje Šepera (the promenade). The Bastion will be on your right, a short walk along the promenade.

Public Transport

From the Osijek bus station, walk towards the nearest tram stop. Take tram line 2 towards Jugovićeva and get off at the 'Trg Ante Starčevića' stop. From there, walk towards Šetalište kardinala Franje Šepera. The Bastion will be along this promenade, a short walk away. A tram ticket costs around 11 HRK.

Driving

From the D7 or D2, follow signs to the city center (Centar). Once in the city center, navigate to Šetalište kardinala Franje Šepera. The Bastion is located along this promenade. Parking is available nearby, but street parking may be limited. Šamačka 6 Parking is one option, with hourly rates around €0.30 and a daily maximum of €6.11.

Overview

The Bastion in Osijek stands as a testament to the city's rich and layered past. Constructed in the 18th century by the Habsburg monarchy, the fortress was part of a strategic defensive system against the Ottoman Empire. Osijek's strategic importance has been recognized since Roman times when the town of Mursa was established on the site.The Bastion is located on the right bank of the Drava River. The fortress features impressive architecture and well-preserved walls. Visitors can explore the grounds, enjoy views of the river, and relax in the surrounding green spaces. The grassy areas on top of the Bastion are ideal for picnics.While much of the original fortifications were demolished in the early 20th century to allow for urban development, parts of the first and eighth bastions, along with the northern wall and Water Gate, have been preserved. Today, the Bastion hosts cultural events and festivals, making it a vibrant hub for locals and tourists.
