Discover more about Aquatika

Aquatika – Freshwater Aquarium Karlovac offers a captivating journey into the underwater world of Croatia's rivers. Opened in 2016, the aquarium is situated on the right bank of the Korana River. Its unique design, partially dug into the ground and covered with earthen embankments, was inspired by Karlovac's historic star-shaped town center and defensive earthen walls. The aquarium's exhibition areas present an overview of the flora and fauna of Croatian rivers and their ecosystems, the geological past, and the traditional culture and history of the Karlovac area. The layout follows the course of a typical karst river, from its source to its mouth, displaying the diverse habitats and biodiversity along the way. Visitors can observe over 80 fish species and 2,000 specimens in 25 aquariums. Exhibits showcase the dark world of underground caves, the biodiversity of Croatian rivers, and the Danube basin. One exhibit features Croatian endemic species of fish, organized by specific geographical areas. The aquarium also displays sturgeon family members, some of the oldest fish species dating back to the age of dinosaurs. Beyond its captivating displays, Aquatika emphasizes the threats facing Croatia's freshwater ecosystems, such as pollution and overfishing. It aims to educate visitors about the importance of protecting this natural wealth and promoting sustainable tourism.
