Discover more about Fort Imperial

Fort Imperial, a historic fortress on Mount Srđ, stands as a testament to Dubrovnik's enduring strength. Constructed in 1812 by Napoleon's occupying forces, the fort was strategically positioned to defend against naval attacks. After Napoleon's fall, the Austro-Hungarian authorities expanded and reinforced the fort. Though initially losing importance, Fort Imperial regained prominence during the Homeland War in the 1990s, becoming a symbol of Dubrovnik's defense against Serbian and Montenegrin armies. The largest attack occurred on December 6, 1991, when outnumbered Croatian defenders fought off the enemy. Today, Fort Imperial houses the Homeland War Museum, which displays original documents, photographs, weapons, and other artifacts from the war. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing the fort's history and its role in protecting the city. The fort's strategic position offers stunning views of Dubrovnik's Old Town and the Adriatic Sea, making it a perfect spot for photography and relaxation.
