Veliki Risnjak: Croatia's Majestic Peak

Veliki Risnjak, standing at 1,528 meters (5,013 feet), is the crowning jewel of Risnjak National Park and the second highest peak in Gorski Kotar. This prominent peak has drawn mountaineers and nature enthusiasts since ancient times, offering unparalleled views that stretch from the Kvarner islands and Istria to the distant Alps in Slovenia.The mountain's name, like the park itself, is derived from the Croatian word for lynx ('ris'), a testament to the wild and untamed nature of the area. The mountain's slopes are covered in dense forests, which give way to rocky terrain as you approach the summit. The summit itself is characterized by white cliffs, making it easily recognizable.Below the summit, hikers can find refuge at the Šloserov dom (Schlosser's mountain hut), named after Josip Schlosser, a botanist and the first president of the Croatian Mountaineering Association. The most popular trails start from Crni Lug, near the park's main entrance.
