Discover more about Hvar Arsenal

The Hvar Arsenal, prominently located on Hvar's harbor front, is a testament to the island's rich history and strategic importance. Originally constructed in the 14th century, between 1292 and 1331, by the order of Venice, it served as a vital maintenance shipyard for the commune's galleys. Its location was strategically chosen to provide shelter from harsh weather and integrate with the city's defenses. Over the centuries, the Arsenal has evolved, reflecting the changing needs of Hvar. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt, but it was unfortunately destroyed by the Turks in 1571. The Arsenal received its present look in 1611, undergoing restoration and expansion under Prince Pietro Semitecolo. A significant addition was the construction of the historic theatre (Hvarsko Kazalište) in 1612 on the first floor, above the galley space, marking it as one of the oldest public theaters in Europe. The Fontik, a communal warehouse, was added to the northern facade in 1612. The Arsenal's ground floor has served various purposes, including warehousing and even a cinema in the 20th century. Today, it functions as a versatile space for performances and exhibitions. The Hvar Arsenal has been carefully restored and transformed into a vibrant cultural center.
