Discover more about Hvar Theatre

The Hvar Theatre, nestled in the heart of Hvar Town within the Arsenal building, holds a distinguished place in European history as one of the continent's first public theaters. Established in 1612 during the time of Venetian Prince Pietro Semitecolo, the theater emerged from a period of social reconciliation, symbolized by the inscription “ANNO SECVNDO PACIS MDCXII” above its entrance. This translates to “In the second year of peace 1612”. Originally constructed as part of the Arsenal, which served as a galley shipyard from 1292 to 1331, the theater provided a communal space for people of all social standings to enjoy cultural and social events. This was a revolutionary concept at a time when theaters were typically privately owned and exclusive to the elite. Over the centuries, the theater has undergone several renovations, most notably in 1803, which brought about its present Italian opera house style with two rows of boxes. Further renovations in the mid-19th century gave the theatre its current neo-Baroque style. Inside, visitors can admire preserved frescoes, including one from 1819 on the back wall of the stage and another depicting the Governor's Palace from around 1900. Despite undergoing restoration, the theater retains its charm, offering a tangible connection to Hvar's vibrant cultural heritage. The theater has a compact design, creating an intimate atmosphere that has been at the center of Hvar's cultural life for centuries.
