Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you're traveling by car, head towards the town of Pazin, which is centrally located in Istria. From Pazin, take the D21 road heading southwest towards the town of Kanfanar. Follow D21 until you reach the intersection with the D75 road. Turn left onto D75 and continue towards the village of Šterna. Once in Šterna, look for Unnamed Road on your GPS or map. Ponor Butori is located along this road, approximately 2 km from the center of Šterna. Parking may be limited, so look for designated spots or possible roadside parking.
Public Transportation
For public transportation, take a bus from major towns like Pula, Rovinj, or Umag to Pazin. Once in Pazin, you will need to take a local bus that heads to Šterna. Be sure to check the local bus schedules as they may vary. Once you arrive in Šterna, you will have to walk approximately 2 km to reach Ponor Butori, following the Unnamed Road, as public transport may not take you directly to the site.
Bicycle
For the more adventurous, consider renting a bicycle in Pazin. From Pazin, cycle towards Kanfanar on D21, then take D75 towards Šterna. Keep an eye out for Unnamed Road, which leads directly to Ponor Butori. The ride is approximately 10 km and offers scenic views of Istria’s countryside. Ensure to bring water and wear appropriate cycling gear.
