Nesactium, also known as Nezakcij in Croatian, was the capital of the Histri, an Iron Age people who inhabited Istria. The site is located on Glavica hill near Valtura, offering strategic views of the fertile valley and Budava Bay. This ancient settlement boasts a rich history, with evidence of habitation from the Bronze and Iron Ages through Roman and Late Antiquity periods. In pre-Roman times, Nesactium was the main political and religious center of the Histri tribe. The Histri were known for their trade and piracy in the Mediterranean Sea. Ruled by King Epulon, they resisted Roman expansion until 177 BC when the Romans conquered and destroyed the town. According to legend, rather than surrender to the Romans, Epulon and his warriors committed suicide. The town was rebuilt by the Romans, incorporating typical Roman features such as a forum, temples, and baths. Nesactium was connected to other Roman settlements by the Via Flavia, a road that connected Trieste to Dalmatia. The town remained inhabited until the 6th century when it was destroyed during barbarian invasions. Today, visitors can explore the archaeological park, which features conserved architectural remains from the Roman and Late Antiquity periods, including the necropolis with over 100 graves.
