Cickini Travel Guide

Nestled in a dense forest near Sršići, the archaeological site of Cickini reveals the remains of an early Christian church complex dating back to the 6th century AD. This single-nave church, constructed during late antiquity, possibly on the site of a Roman village from the 1st century, features a layout in the shape of a Latin cross with a semi-circular apse. The Bishop of Krk used the location as a temporary refuge.Excavations, which began in 2002, have unearthed significant artifacts, including a 5th-century capital from an altar partition and a 6th-century part of the altar rail. The complex includes auxiliary rooms, a baptistery with a brick font for adult baptisms, and a residential area. A small museum in Sveti Vid displays these findings, offering insights into the site's history. The church was likely abandoned in the late 8th or early 9th century. The toponym suggests the church was dedicated to St. Cyprian. Today, Cickini provides a serene escape and a chance to connect with Croatia's rich religious past.
