The Euphrasian Basilica, a gem of Byzantine art and architecture, stands as the most significant cultural monument in Poreč, Croatia. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997, this episcopal complex represents one of the best-preserved early Christian complexes in the world.Built in the 6th century during the reign of Bishop Euphrasius, under Emperor Justinian, the basilica marks a transformative period for Poreč, then a small provincial town. The basilica was constructed on the site of earlier religious buildings, with remnants of Roman architecture still visible. Marble blocks were imported from the Sea of Marmara, and Byzantine masters created the wall mosaics, while local experts crafted the floor mosaics.The basilica is renowned for its stunning mosaics, particularly those in the apse. The central mosaic depicts the Mother of God enthroned with Christ, flanked by archangels, St. Maurus (the patron saint of Poreč), and Bishop Euphrasius.
