Fort Lovrijenac: Dubrovnik's Defender

Fort Lovrijenac, often called 'Dubrovnik's Gibraltar', is a commanding fortress and open-air theater located just outside the western walls of Dubrovnik's Old Town. Perched dramatically on a 37-meter high rocky cliff overlooking the Adriatic Sea, it has been a symbol of the city's resilience for centuries.Legend says that the fort was constructed in the early 11th century in a mere three months by the people of Dubrovnik to thwart Venetian plans to build their own fortress there and seize the city. The inscription above the entrance, 'Non Bene Pro Toto Libertas Venditur Auro' ('Freedom is not to be sold for all the treasures in the world'), reflects this defiant spirit. Throughout its history, Lovrijenac has been continuously upgraded, with major alterations in the 15th and 16th centuries.The triangular-shaped fortress has three terraces with powerful parapets. The walls facing the sea are up to 12 meters thick, while those facing the city are only 60 cm thick, a strategic design to prevent internal rebellion. Inside, you'll find a courtyard and a small chapel. Today, Fort Lovrijenac is a popular tourist attraction, offering breathtaking views of Dubrovnik's Old Town and serving as a prominent venue for theatrical performances during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, most notably Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'. It also gained fame as the Red Keep in the 'Game of Thrones' series.
